MostPublic Index: Vancouver

Posted in Arieanna & Ianiv, Around Vancouver, Blogging, Business, Social networking

NowPublic today announced, in partnership with the Vancouver Sun, the launch of its fourth MostPublic Index, this time for Vancouver. And I’m in the top 10!

The MostPublic Index identifies the Web’s 20 most visible individuals, those who are engaged in the world around them;

“This is the first attempt to take a group of people and say, ‘Let’s crunch the data and see when somebody says something, how many people do they reach with that message.’ “I think the list will surprise some people,” – Leonard Brody, CEO of NowPublic

Although I do “keep my head down” in many ways, I’m nothing if not prolific on the web. It’s a great honor to be a part of this list.

The Top 10 from the Vancouver MostPublic Index are:

  1. Darren Barefoot         http://www.darrenbarefoot.com/
  2. Tim Bray        http://www.tbray.org/ongoing/
  3. Boris Mann        http://blog.bootuplabs.com/
  4. Kris Krüg       http://kriskrug.com/
  5. Roland Tanglao  http://rolandtanglao.com/
  6. Tom Williams    http://www.givemeaning.com/blog/index.html
  7. Megan Cole      http://www.megancole.org/
  8. Rebecca Bollwitt         http://www.miss604.com/
  9. Arieanna Schweber       http://www.blogaholics.ca/
  10. Tod Maffin      http://todmaffin.com/

Check out the full Top 20 here. And have a look around the NowPublic site – if you haven’t seen it since the re-design, it’s well worth some of your time. The header is constantly changing too, which is great fun.

And yes, I’m aware the Vancouver Sun mis-spelled my name :(

Blogworld Expo Party Time! – Techset Party

Posted in Arieanna & Ianiv

One of the greatest things about coming to events like Blog World Expo is the opportunity to meet people face to face that you’ve followed online for a while, or worked with. In this case, I’m getting to meet some great folks from b5media that I work with every day. This is me with Julie Bonner, who writes for Entertainment on sites like TomKatCrazy and Desperate Blog.

Happy b5-iversary to Me

Today marks my 3-year anniversary with b5media. Hard to believe that was 3 years ago already!

I’ve been with b5media since the day they launched – on September 19, 2005 my two blogs with b5 were Cooking-Gadgets (which I still write) and SheKnowsBest (no longer writing).

A lot has changed since the blog network launched – both from a b5media perspective and from my perspective as part of the company.

Over the years, there was a progression for more of my time to be devoted to work at b5. After being the first person to work “full time” on my blogs there, things progressed. I became the first Channel Editor (CE) in the first channel, which was then a combo of Entertainment & Celebrities. The channels eventually split, then were managed separately, and now are (mostly) back together. The current Entertainment channel has over 50 blogs.

Within b5, I still write Cooking-Gadgets, but also write on Gilmore Girls News, Mischa News, Hilary News and Lohan Groupie. There have been times when I’ve written more sites, and likely I will move towards writing fewer sites.

The work I enjoy the most at b5 is about community – about fostering community on my sites, but more importantly fostering community within the Entertainment channel. I love working with each and every one of my writers – they do some amazing work! I have also fallen in love with the Entertainment industry – I love the pace of it, the style of it, and the community that flocks to it.

Molson Brew 2.0

Molson Brew 2.0

Last night we attended Molson’s second Brew 2.0 event, the first of which was held earlier this summer in Toronto.

Molson put together an event to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Vancouver’s Burrard Street Brewery. The night consisted of a meet & greet party, a beer & food tasting, a tour of the Molson brewery and a special one-night-only beer crafted especially for us. We had a chance to meet brewmasters Kerry Scarsbrook and Gord Rickards (creator of Rickard’s Red), as well as 7th generation Molson family brewer Geoff Molson.

The Brew 2.0 menu prepared by by Blair Rasmussen, Executive Chef at the Pan Pacific, featuring ceviche and bruschetta and bison sandwiches, was paired up with different beer choices for each course. Rickard’s White for the ceviche, Coor’s Light with the bruschetta, etc. The special 50th anniversary brew was, to me, kind of like a Hefeweizen meets a Brown – it had a taste like celery. Quite nice.

We learned a lot about beer, including the difference between the beer that goes into the keg vs what is bottled / canned. That difference being pasteurization. We tasted some canned Rickard’s Red right off the line that hadn’t been pasteurized yet, and the difference was significant. Also, the Molson Canadian on tap there, fresh from the brewery, is good. I was astonished by that – it had so much more body and flavor. We also learned not to place beer bottles on their side for more than a few days – so much for our beer drawer!

The invite for the Brew 2.0 event went out to Vancouver’s social media community – to people like Duane, Rebecca & John, Raul, Colleen, Tanya, Monica, John and many many others. We were not asked to write about the event, but writing is what we do. So, you give us a great experience and we’ll very happily write about it. I was impressed with the evening and with how well Molson reached out to the community – great work!

Last Sunday Ianiv & I went to the Red Bull Soapbox Derby held on West 4th Avenue in Kitsilano. Over 32,000 spectators came out to see the race and the antics of the teams, and just a few of them for the celebrity appearances ;) The Red Bull Soapbox is an international race held in various cities, with 50 teams working months on their soapboxes (and costumes!) for that race down 4th Avenue. Judging of the teams was based on speed but also showmanship & creativity.

Supernatural stars Jensen Ackles & Jared Padalecki were out for the race, which is why I was there for b5. I had a chance to interview the boys after they completed their race (Jared won, btw). I’ve posted the Jared & Jensen bits to Gilmore Girls News here (Jared was on Gilmore Girls):
