Hubble in Trouble: Little Hope for Failing Camera

Posted in News, Technology

The Hubble Space Telescope’s main camera — the ACS (advanced camera for surveys) — has stopped working. It went into safe mode early Saturday morning, and engineers for the space telescope have little hope it can be fixed.

This camera was replaced recently, it is only 4 years old. And the next mission to the telescope will probably not have time to fix this issue, which is not an easy task.
The next Hubble mission is aimed at increasing the telescope’s capability and keep it running until the Webb telescope can be launched early next decade.

The cruelty of American Idol

Posted in Music, News, Other, TV

It’s swirling around the blogosphere, and even in dinner conversations: is American Idol meaner this season?

And I am not so much referring to criticism of singing. That, I can understand. It’s a singing competition. It’s the outright criticism of people themselves: of how they look and act. And, this year more than other years, those made fun of are done so to the extreme, drawn out, and have more obvious things to criticise. Without going to details, more have physical or even obvious emotional defects/problems, and it’s horrid to see them being taunted so.

Example:

Singling out one performer for his appearance, Cowell said the contestant resembled "one of those creatures that live in the jungle with those massive eyes … what are they called? Bush babies?" [Reuters]

Yesterday at the TCA Press Tour, they slightly responded to the criticism, although noting that they are no different than other years…

OK, now on to the "crueler" Simon. "I take your point; it’s a singing competition. Why would I say that someone’s a bush baby?" But he defended himself by saying, "We never try to censor this show. There are times I watch it back and I think, ‘God, I wish I never said that. I feel more comfortable being on a show where we’re prepared to show the warts as well as the good things."

Randy agreed. "It’s season six; it’s no different than it ever was." [TV Squad]

Another quote:

"American Idol" judges Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson and Paula Abdul say they’re no crueler than usual this year, and that people who audition should know what they’re going to get.

"If you don’t want to hear that, don’t show up," Cowell told television writers at a news conference on Saturday. [AP News]

Perhaps we are not asking the right people. Perhaps it is no more mean than others, in terms of Paula/Simon/Randy. Perhaps it’s the producers and editors who are choosing the clips of the criticism and drawing out long scenes on peoples’ appearances. So, let’s listen to their response:

Executive Producer Ken Warwick made no apologies for dwelling on the delusional, the tone-deaf and oddballs among contestants, insisting he was giving viewers what they wanted.

"People like the bad singers," Warwick said. "It’s more the bad singers that will bring in the ratings." [Reuters]

I think what is not being made clear to producers it that the dissatisfaction is less with the talent of the contestants than their obvious appearance flaws.

I’ve always found it annoying that although this is a competition on talent, so many people are aired who have no talent whatsoever. We never hear the mostly good compete against the really good – just the bad versus the good. Entertainment.

For a show with guaranteed high ratings, I was shocked to see them go so far as they did during the premiere week. Completely unnecessary and cruel. And, if this is a true reflection of the changing demands of viewers, the desensitization to cruelty and demands for it for entertainment value, then it is truly sad.

‘Hi, I’m Art Buchwald, and I just died’

Posted in News

What do you think about video taping your own obituary, before you die?

Well, Art Buchwald, well known humor columnist, did just that. Today, Art Buchwald died, and his video has surfaced online.

Go check out the Art Buchwald obit at the New York Times website. Tell me what you think – is it better to write/video tape your own obituary, rather than leave it to others? Or just a tad weird?

‘Don’t email me. I don’t care’

Posted in News, Opinion, Social networking

What a statement for a journalist to make. This is a huge rant published by Joel Stein on the LA Times website. The essence: he does not want anything to do with community. He wants a one-way dialogue, nothing more.

Here’s what my Internet-fearing editors have failed to understand: I don’t want to talk to you; I want to talk at you. A column is not my attempt to engage in a conversation with you. I have more than enough people to converse with. And I don’t listen to them either. That sound on the phone, Mom, is me typing…

I get that you have opinions you want to share. That’s great. You’re the Person of the Year. I just don’t have any interest in them. First of all, I did a tiny bit of research for my column, so I’m already familiar with your brilliant argument. Second, I’ve already written my column, so I can’t even steal your ideas and get paid for them.

The point is not that Joel should write back to any of the comments, but that he use the feedback to learn and develop his own ideas.

Google Checkout – free money, worries, and rushed TOS

Posted in News, Shopping

That’s right, Google is doing something they never do – marketing.

Google has launched Google Checkout – basically, Paypal. Easiest explanation.

As an incentive to use it/switch, they are offering $10 signup bonus (not much, but a lot if people take advantage of it) to spend at participating stores. If you are a lucky US resident, you’ll also see the link to Google Checkout’s $10 promotion right on Google.com

[Credit: costpernews]

There is no reference to any country-specific limitations, but in the irony of launching before you’re ready, looks like their Terms of Service was not quite ready:

"You agree to indemnify, defend and hold harmless GPC, Google, and their subsidiaries and other affiliates, and its and their directors, officers, owners, agents, co-branders or other partners, employees, information providers, licensors, licensees, consultants, contractors and other applicable third parties (including without limitation [Paymentech, L.P.][NTD: Should this reference the Canadian affiliate of Paymentech, Chase Paymentech Solutions?] and relevant Customers)"

Note to Google – remove internal notes before placing Terms of Service online…

For some of the worries related to Google Checkout, Search Engine Land has a great discussion going.

The BC Place dome collapsed

Posted in Around Vancouver, News

Around noon today the dome of BC Place collapsed after it developed a tear on it’s side. I was close by and saw the big hole but I didn’t catch it coming down. But someone captured the whole thing on video and put it on YouTube: video 1, video 2, video 3, video 4, video 5, video 6
