Art with crayons

Posted in Art

Who knew you could create amazing pieces of art with crayons. Thing is, it’s not what you think. No drawing is involved.

It is, in fact, art with crayons. The crayons are the art. Carved into amazing figures by diem chau. Here is his piece called "Installation View"

His mediums are extensive. From crayons "grandma in beehive" (below) to "pencil girl" (below) to paint, traditional or not, all in rich and vibrant tones of life.

Diem chau considers himself a storyteller:

I consider myself an artist whose medium is stories, especially those that are primarily passed on orally. Coming from a nomadic childhood, what few possessions my family had were necessities. The things of greatest value to us were stories contributed by friends and family. Embedded in these stories are connections to the past, our culture and an occasional escape from reality.

Impressive work. Have a look at diem chau‘s website.

There’s something about crayons. Maybe it’s the childhood aspect of colouring or maybe it’s the way that a beautiful shading effect is created when using crayons to colour with. Not like felt pen, which creates a solid fill with every stroke. Being 31 years young, I still prefer crayons more than any other medium! Long live the restaurant with paper tablecloth’s and a cup full of Crayola’s for the kids! Kids, huh?

  2. [...] We have this set of carving knives and stuff that are intended to be used to create weird stuff out of food. I don’t understand the point of such a thing, except for pumpkin carving. I’m wondering if a few of our more creative and artistic family members might be able to use those knives and the abundance of old crayons to create some interesting sculptures – like these. I’m tempted to set a couple to the task, they would make really nice Christmas gifts for grandparents and friends, don’t you think? I know I’ve got a filthy mind, but I look at that first photo and I don’t see crayons…indeed I thought you’d taken blogaholics down market there for a while. :-)

You are filthy indeed, Duncan! ;)

Diem is actually a woman artist. She resides in Seattle, and she graduated from Cornish College of the Arts. Her work is quite wonderful, and she has done much more than just the crayon sculptures. It is worth goggling her to see more of her work.
