Session by John Anthony Hartman.
Personal note: Last year I was using MovableType’s web-based editor to blog. This year I’m using Qumana, which I developed myself :). Go and download it!
We are our own channel. We now have the technology to control the distribution of our own content.
www.multimediame.net: the post that started it: 21st Century and the Media
"the margins are radically going to shift from the previously held monopoly on media that the major studios had, to the big budget media outlets versus the Personal Media Outlets."
Research was done sifting through papers, now we can just go online. And every home has the same access to the same information. Access in third-world countries is an issue and there are people trying to bring the same network to them.
What is a blog?
Publication on the Internet that enables anyone to show the world what they want to say, with any kind of media.
Fundamentally, a blog is expression.
People are making the old media companies remember the right way of doing things, how to pay attention.
Radio: what used to take one person evolved to something that needed a whole team of people. And now it has gone back to one person and the radio studios have become your house. We also now have the capacity to shift our media, eliminating the wait time that was required before consuming it.
Archiving has also improved. It is also much easier to transport media today.
The costs of running a radio network brought the need for advertising. The allocated time for programs started to shift toward commercial content, full of advertising.
Creative Commons: Licenses that you can understand and use to retain your copyright and grant people the use of your content with just some restrictions.
All rights reserved vs. Some rights reserved.
Permission is granted before people have to ask for it. Remove the intermediary.
It’s a licensing model that allows the existance of a mashup culture.
Video: we are at the very early stages.
We have streaming and broadband issues. It is getting better but it is still evolving and we are still trying to figure out how to distribute it. Video takes longer to produce. Software is being created to make this process easier.
We are the media
