Nikon to go almost 100% digital

Posted in News, Photography

According to this press release Nikon will start to focus exclusively on digital photography. 95% of their current business is related to digital products. They will continue to manufacture the F6 and FM10 and a handful of manual lenses but they will drop all other analog products:

As a result of the new strategy Nikon will discontinue production of all lenses for large format cameras and enlarging lenses with sales of these products ceasing as soon as they run out of stock. This also applies to most of our film camera bodies, interchangeable manual focus lenses and related accessories.

There will always be a market for analog cameras, but with the rest of the world moving to digital, most camera manufacturers will have to make moves like this. We’ll probably see only a few companies that will keep catering to the new film camera niche market.
