Jeremy Wright is brokering the sale of a "big" blog, with an anticipated start bid of $40k, but he won’t say which blog. So, let’s play "Guess that blog"
Here are the hints:
- it’s a "defining blog"
- it has only one author
- it’s in the top 100 blogs by all measures but Technorati
- therefore, it’s in the top 100 blogs listed by Feedster
- it likely isn’t a gadget blog
- it’s quoted in newspapers weekly
- it has won many awards
- it has a PageRank of 7
- it has 150,000 indexed pages on Yahoo/MSN and 60,000 on Google
- it makes 2,000$/month (somewhat on the low side of average for a top 100)
- it’s in need of a new design and someone who knows ads
- it gets 1 million pageviews per month
- the writer is somewhat intimate with Jeremy to be brokering this deal
- Jeremy also drops some examples of blogs of the right type like Problogger or Scobelizer, probably dropping them out of possibilities, which Scoble confirms in comments below
- and that it has the “Potential to anchor a network of blogs or sites”
- and gives away in comments below that it is not Waxy.org
Now, that’s a lot of hints. Thanks Jeremy! Anyone want to place a guess? I have a couple guesses I’d wager on, but I don’t want to bias the projections of others.
Update: Jeremy is offering up a prize for the right guess on this one. If you are the first to get it right, he’ll give you $100 (USD) or $500 in advertising and a free copy of his book, Blog Marketing. So, now we have a contest to get this going. Post your guesses and see if you can win! It’s a sweet deal!
Update:The contest is now closed, and the winner is John Evans for guessing the Blog Herald! Congrats to Duncan and to John as well. Read more here.

Darren’s blog?
I’ll take a shot: scobleizer
waxy.org is my guess
It isn’t me.
Oooh, Waxy’d be fun to sell! It’s not a top 100 blog, though, is it?
Jeremy, you are so going to give it away ;)
Well, crap ;)
Jeremy, waxy is #89 on the feedster list ;-)
A: I’m bad that way.
Paul: Ah, fair enough. I guess my ignorance means it isn’t Waxy then, eh?
Im gonna go with buzzmachine (v.likely) or lifehacker (potentially) :)
Daily Kos. One-man band, quoted in newspapers (profiled in NYTimes). Enormous community of readers. Fits the “defining blog,” plus the owner’s ambitious to be a political mover.
Forgetting until seconds after I pushed the “post” button, that Kos is now #4 on Technorati. So much for progostication.
Ok, I’m stumped. The only other ones I can think of are either multi-author, or so personal (ie. author name is the domain name) that no one could take them over without changing their identity. I love this though, the suspense is killing me!
Have a look at the Feedster list, maybe it will give you some ideas
I think this blog is Google Blogoscoped (Philipp Lenssen)
My guess is Daily Pundit. =)
when did he say it wasn’t Scoble or proBlogger? I think he just used us as examples…. ;-)
HackADay. Eh?
Could well be Darren. Maybe I’ll update that to “probably” That, or Jeremy has a really really big mouth. ;)
how about Knittyblog(knitty.com/blog)? I think it’s a cute site b/c it has bunnies on it… hehe
my guess is TVsquad b/c they’re cool!
Search Engine Journal?
PaidContent.org???
Which would be too bad, because I really like under Rafat…
PaidContent has more than one author (Staci Kramer as well as Rafat), which rules them out. ProBlogger is an interesting suspect, since Darren just got back from a break, he’s got plenty to do with B5 Media, and knows Jeremy.
But my guess is Micropersuasion (Steve Rubel). PR7, the defining PR blog, and Steveis oft-quoted.
pocketpcthoughts.com?
“or Jeremy has a really really big mouth. ;)”
LOL! no comment needed…hehe
In all of this fray, I see that Om Malik is NOT in this list.
Now I wonder why Om is selling his blog?
;-)
Seems like instapundit.com to me. :p
I think we should expand the search to the top 200 in Feedster, and maybe other lists (hint with no knowledge behind it)
I think I must be missing the point here – what makes darren & Steve’s sites so popular are… Darren & Steve. Without them, I can’t see either site continuing. To me, one of the defining features of a blog is a strong & personal point-of-view. You can’t buy a point of view.
My final answer: buzzmachine.com
Or, rather, that’s not my final answer…because it doesn’t get anywhere near the right amount of pageviews…probably doesn’t make $2000/month. But it IS a PR 7, written by one person and in the top 100. So it’s not a BAD guess…
You’d think people only saw the top few sites in Top 100 or Top 200 list (for the record, I just checked Feedster’s last iteration, and the blog in question is in the Top 200, my apologies).
Again, this isn’t some site that is making tens of thousands of dollars per month (ie: PaidContent).
In fact, if that’s all anyone thinks about, methinks you’ll be a touch disappointed by what it is. So far the interested buyers aren’t (I’ve got 4 wanting to talk to the owner), but all the same – there are a tonne more blogs it could be that are less than 1M pages per month and only making a couple of grand.
I’m going to plump for overheardinnewyork.com, which misses some of those criteria so is probably wrong, but never mind :)
I will guess “tothpaste for dinner” (toothpastefordinner.com).
How it got in the top 200 is a mystery in itself. I would sell it while it is hot too if it were mine.
Apple Insider?
Bet it’s Pepys Diary.
I think it’s BuzzMachine, not that there’s any point in me saying that as I’m not the first :)
I’d like to lock in the Superchefblog, thanks.
Am I allowed to say that nobody’s guessed it yet? If not, ignore this comment ;-)
Can I guess again? Dooce.com
Hmm. I’m going to throw in some ideas – clearly while it only has one author that author must be pretty important to the blog. But i don’t believe they are absolutely vital to the site either in terms of name, or of insight – so not, for example Buzzmachine (why would Jeff do that?).
So my guess was going to be
Ain’t it cool… until I realised there’s more than one author.
Argh!
It’s got to be Blog Herald. PR 7, that kind of price, intimate of Jeremy, needs new design (don’t we all), Duncan not replying to email, and no mention on Blog Herald. It’s Blog Herald!!! I might even be interested myself.
kottke.org
Actually I reread the comment about it being top 200. I’m thinking…
wilwheaton.net
I don’t think it will be a blog which has the “owners” name in the domain name.
I’m guessing BuzzMachine.
Jalopnik
http://www.jalopnik.com/
It appears to be the only logical choice, if everything Jeremy said is correct.
Specifically PR 7, was Top 100 in Feedster before (initial post) and now in top 200 (after correction), gets over a million page views per month, pretty important for the industry etc.
Angsuman Chakraborty, I doubt Gawker Media would want to lose this baby.
Also, Nick would not have to involve Jeremy for brokering the deal as he is by no means shy and knows ads pretty well. :)
Yep, Nick wouldn’t need my help to sell one of his blogs :)
My guess is 43 Folders.
