Blogging up a storm

Ok, so vacations are a good thing right?

We’re trying to prepare for this “non-work” period, which feels kinda weird. And I am not sure how we’ll react to it. First off, we are getting one of those outlet thingies for the car so we can power our laptops from the lighter. So, we can “technically” do some work while driving to California and back, but without wireless of course.

So, we’re not completely away from the temptations of work, and yes there are many, so I wonder how well we’ll do?

How am I supposed to travel without my email?

How will I cope with the email when I open it?

What if I get an awesome link and I’m not there?

How the heck am I supposed to manage 16 blogs when I am away??

How do you manage to write 8 days worth of posts in 3 days (I am advance posting for some blogs)?

How do I stop the urge to work at midnight when we get back from Disneyland?

Oh, the temptations will be there. I’ll want to check my email. And my stats. And my earnings. And work. Yeah, I love working. Not such a bad thing. But I think after a couple of days I’ll be able to put away some of the nagging work signals and just have fun. So long as I can get all this advance posting done. I think I’ve written 40 or so posts tonight. On a roll.

Wish me luck ;)

Not what you want to hear if you really do want to stay completely away from the work stuff…

When Reilly and I drove to PEI and back last summer, we had absolutely no problem in getting wifi access in literally every single little town we stopped in, and most times in no more than a block of scanning. We had to use webmail to send any email of course as relay isn’t generally allowed and we were connecting from different hosts, but the number of completely wide open networks out there did not disappoint. In our case, we couldn’t get away without tending to our clients, but we found it very easy despite being in our car :)

That’s the thing-blogging takes a LOT of time. I’ve just recently started pro blogging for one site two times a week-and each post almost takes me an hour. It’s been a lot of time over the three months. Which leads me to ask, with all of your blogs, how do you decide when they’re a success and worth your time away from other blogs? Is there a certain time period you give a blog to take off? I’m thinking I’ll give it another 3 (it’s a group blog)-to see if we’re getting substantial hits and pay.

Good question. For me it’s topic specific. If it’s an established topic, you should get noticed and get traffic much sooner, since there are others to link to you. If it’s a new topic, but you think it will be very popular in certain areas, you should receive a huge incline in growth at about 2 months or less. For some topics, you really have to stick it out – for me, it comes to whether I am still having fun at it or not.
