Looney Tunes Flashback

Posted in Art

I totally forgot about this character of the Looney Tunes:

This is one of many great pictures from the Non-Stick Looney Tunes site.

Hi! I’m a fan of your page, but I notice that you tend to ‘hotlink.’ That is, rather than uploading an image to your own image host, you directly link to the image on someone else’s page.

This may seem quiet innocent, however, what you are actually doing is stealing that person’s bandwidth. Most blogs have an allotted amount of bandwidth that they can not go over without paying extra. That is definitely true with my site.

My suggestion would be to find your own image host and upload your own images. That way, you won’t be using up another person’s bandwidth.

Still, it’s an honor to be linked to here, and I do enjoy your page.

    Thanks!

    Exclamation Mark

If you are going to leave such a nice comment but take not so nice actions to stop the ‘hotlink’, please take the time within your comment to ask to remove said hotlink.

We happily listen to all reader comments.

Quite frankly, anyone who hotlinks deserves whatever they get. You should never, ever hotlink unless you want to let whoever is hosting the image decide what your page looks like. By the very action of commenting on the post, “Exclamation Mark” was being really sweet—by letting you know something had changed. Otherwise you mightn’t have noticed for quite a while.

    Hey Arieanna,

I know it might have seemed harsh to you, but I just wanted to demonstrate the dangers of hotlinking. It not only uses up another person’s bandwidth, but it gives the person the ability to put whatever they want on your page. I was actually being very polite, considering the images other people have used when people have hotlinked to them.

Also, this has become such a problem for me that I have had to upgrade my account and pay three times as much as I did before because of others using my images. If anyone was being inconsiderate here, it was you.

That being said, I don’t think you meant me any harm, and at least you linked to my page. Most hotlinkers just steal my bandwidth and then don’t even mention my site in their posts. I certainly don’t think you are a bad person, and I certainly don’t mean to cause you any undue stress.

For a long time, when people hotlinked from me, I would send polite emails or leave polite comments, and eventually the person would stop hotlinking. However, after I started using the “It’s not nice to hotlink” sign, I find people take me more seriously. I just can’t afford to pay any more for my bandwidth, and blogging is a hobby I rather enjoy.

I’m sorry if I hurt your feelings, but at least I didn’t cost you any extra monthly fees. And, as I’ve said above, I do enjoy your blog.

    Exclamation Mark

PS. And I hope you understand, I have no problem AT ALL with you using the image. Go ahead and use it, just upload it to your own host. That little red monster is a funny guy and brings lightheartedness to all who see him. And I certainly don’t have any problem with that!
